These shirts are now a wardrobe staple. (I cut down the tissue pattern to my size before the latest shirt-I think the tissue will wear out before I change the size I make it in!). Here are the last three from my summer sewing:
Some notes on the shirts and what I learned/tried out making each of them (left to right):
- cherry blossoms on yellow This is the only shirt I've made so far from fabric I've bought, rather than taken from Grandma's stash (in one way or another). It's made out of quilting cotton, and the heavier weight wears awkwardly in the summer. We'll see how it goes in the winter...
The new detail on this one was a pale blue ribbon inserted into the front button band, barely visible in the photo, which gives an extra-tailored appeal to the finished product.
- plaid/faux-quilt in brown, russet and navy This is the newest of the shirts, made from what turned out to be barely enough fabric reclaimed from an Orvis skirt Grandma gave me (contrast fabric on the interior is one of great grandma' shirt fabrics). It's my first attempt to work in plaid, and I didn't have enough fabric to match the plaid in the back (not pictured), although it turned out pretty well in the front.
Other technical notes: I removed about an inch from the collar and collar stand on this one, which means I can actually close the front button comfortably (although the it now has a small gap when I button it, instead of meeting at a point). The short sleeves are just cut down versions of the pattern's long sleeves; next time, I'd add a little extra fabric in the width at the end so it doesn't get tighter when I turn under the hem. I also put in (ahem fixed a left-right error on cutting) a double-reinforced button band.
- small flowers on blue Another fabric from Grandma's stash, this fabric is a beautiful lightweight cotton that's been a joy to wear during the hot months this summer. (Interior yoke and collar stand are made from a navy blue and brown plaid.) This sleeveless shirt was based on instructions from the designer here: http://sewaholic.net/blue-floral-sleeveless-granville-shirt/ . It's still not properly finished-I just hand tacked the armholes-but it's been holding up well nonetheless. Next time, I'd take out a bit more than was suggested in the above instructions, especially under the arms; I find this one gaps a bit.
